“A Vintage Affair” - Isabel Wolff

A Vintage Affair is a novel that my fiance bought me for my birthday — I only asked for books this year, and Greyson gifted me with choices, so many choices; and Isabel Wolff’s book is one that I ordered off of Amazon. I don’t remember exactly where it was that I first heard of this book, as I don’t list my “reasons” for cataloguing books into my Blackberry (though I may start!); but whatever the cause, I am so very glad that I did.
In its earliest pages, the reader is transported into the world of Phoebe Swift and all of the people she meets. I was enthralled, to say the least, as I walked with Phoebe through her days of owning a vintage clothing shop in London. I loved reading about her afternoon talks with an elderly woman that she meets, Mrs. Bell, who has a fascinating life story to be told (all beginning with a beautiful blue coat); and I was intrigued by Phoebe’s relationship with her best friend, Emma, which turned into a friendship that was excruciating as much as it was passionate. The reader so enjoys traveling with Phoebe through discovery of herself, love, and attachments; and the realization that pain from what has been lost can, indeed, be healed.
“A captivating story about the power of friendship… More than a novel, it is a recipe for happiness.” -Anne Fortier, New York Times bestselling author of Juliet
This story, essentially, made me passionate about writing again. Not the blogging that I do on a daily basis, but actual story writing. It was incredible to have that whirr of zealousness ignited in me again, and I truly feel that I have Isabel Wolff and Phoebe Swift to thank for that. I am looking forward to continuing the story that I left completely unfinished over a year ago and getting back to my roots — where my love for writing all started — in fiction.
I loved this novel so much, and I will surely be keeping it on my bookshelf in hopes that someday soon I may return to it, if only to revisit an old friend.
I give this book five out of five stars.
